Ray’s
’97 2.8 (Storage Unit Install)

This might be the easiest DIY project you’ll
ever have to do. There are still some problems that you’ll have
that I have not addressed b/c I’m enjoying the sound too much right
now, but I’ll cover those later.
- I had circuit city install the other parts to
the stereo and did the sub myself.
- The DKD110’s are too big for the rear
spot, some modification is required, I still haven’t done that.
- Remove the top to the storage compartment by
unscrewing the two rubber screws holding the top on.

- Remove the actual storage compartment by unscrewing
the two screws in the front and the screws along the back of the compartment.
Remember those little annoying ridges you’re supposed to cut off
in the Sunfire installation guide; that’s where the storage compartment
screws into.
- Now you should follow Kevin’s instructions
and cut off the plastic ridge completely (this is a must), install the
dynamat and stick on the foam padding underneath the sub box.
- At this point it’s a little different.
Since having the storage compartment offers more horizontal room than
a previous Sub enclosure, I still haven’t figured out how to “secure”
it. You really don’t have to b/c of the snug fit. The only modifications
I made to the design were to place some foam between the sub and the
locking mechanism towards the front to minimize rattling and secure
the sub further. The small rubber spacers made the rear wall of the
compartment stick out too far for me, but that’s b/c I didn’t
follow the directions and left two of the screw holes in case I ever
wanted to re-install the storage compartment. But it doesn’t rattle
anyway (I’m not an audiophile). You can still store stuff on either
side of the woofer if you really wanted to, but I wouldn’t recommend
it.

- The wiring job was the “hardest”
part but still simple. Just remove the support pegs for the upper trunk
liner and follow the wires for the rear speakers that run into the compartment.
I used a light inside the compartment to guide my way there.
- Finally the best part is that not only do you
retain the lower storage compartment, but it everything still locks!
- Once again, kudos to Kevin!
